The continued development of new materials that break down in the environment and the development of efficient recovery technologies are essential to solving the fundamental problem of marine plastics.
Conventional plastics are not easily degraded in the natural environment and remain in the environment for hundreds of years, seriously impacting marine ecosystems.
As the problem of marine plastics becomes more serious, Widespread use of plastics that biodegrade in the ocean is one way to solve the problem. It is expected as a
Although the development and marketing of marine biodegradable materials is gradually underway, it is said that it will take some time before full-scale practical application and diffusion of biodegradable materials are realized.
As we enter the year 2026, what is the current state of technological progress, including the development of innovative new materials and recovery technologies? And what are the challenges ahead?
Toward solving major social issues, neo functional material Green Materials will focus on marine biodegradable plastics in the mid to long term as a joint project and introduce as much information as possible to you through the exhibition.

- Unlike biopolyester (PHBV), which biodegrades quickly, genetic analysis has revealed that "microbial collaboration" between bacteria that produce degrading enzymes and bacteria that eat degraded products is essential for the biodegradation of chemically synthesized polyester (PBSA). Using this knowledge, we blended "16-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid (16HHD)" and "polycaprolactone (PCL)" with PBS, which is slow in marine biodegradation, resulting in a marked improvement in marine biodegradability. This was because these compounds allowed the microbial communities that promote degradation to accumulate on the plastic surface and express enzymes.
This technology shows the potential to harness marine microorganisms with specific ingredients to accelerate the processing of less degradable plastics in the ocean.
